Come and let us show you what our medical staff and community have to offer.

AnMed strives to expand medical education opportunities in upstate South Carolina as part of a strategy to improve access to care and address the growing shortage of primary care physicians and specialists in the area.

AnMed's medical education program emphasizes primary care and certain specialties (family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, OB-GYN, general surgery, psychiatry, emergency medicine and meds-peds) and seeks to recruit and retain students to continue their practice in Upstate communities. Ideally, some of the students that complete our program will continue family medicine residency training at AnMed and eventually practice locally. Those completing specialty residencies will be actively recruited to return to the greater Anderson area for their medical practice.

AnMed’s partnership with the Medical University of South Carolina, South Carolina’s largest medical school, brings access to extensive research, the most current developments in medicine, and nationally-recognized experts in a wide range of specialties, providing excellent, community-based clinical education. Our local medical student education faculty is comprised of a large group of dedicated, diverse and well-trained physicians.

You can learn more about the program and our state-of-the-art teaching tools by watching local news coverage of our Bob simulators here.

The video below shares information about our program at AnMed and the opportunities that our medical students receive while learning with us.

Program Information

The medical education program offers integrative, hands-on experience for students while working under the direct supervision of an attending physician and rotating through each major discipline of medicine:

  • Family medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Internal medicine
  • OB-GYN
  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry
  • General surgery

Students have multiple learning opportunities, including:

  • Continuity clinic - Students participate in clinical experiences at the Anderson Free Clinic, offering continuous management of patients' chronic diseases. With graduated responsibility and appropriate supervision, medical students perform all the functions of a primary care physician for their patients. Continuity clinic is a great way to build a mentoring relationship with an attending physician, and provides the opportunity for practice-based learning, as students analyze performance outcomes for their own patients and implement systematic changes for quality improvement.
  • Didactics - All of our didactics and seminars are provided in a small-group format, providing ample opportunity for medical students to interact and engage in active learning.
  • Hispanic Health Fair - At this annual health fair, medical students provide medical screenings and information to members of the Hispanic community in Anderson County. Students administer flu vaccines, check blood pressure and blood glucose, and perform foot exams and other screenings with appropriate supervision.
  • Simulation lab - Part of Anderson University's College of Health Professions, the Center for Medical Simulations is designed to provide a realistic clinical experience for medical students. The Center has more than a dozen human simulators; this cutting-edge technology looks like human-scale replicas of patients, from newborns to adults, and can simulate a variety of conditions, including asthma attacks, congestive heart failure and seizures. Interactive in every way, the simulators allow students to ask questions — and get responses — while practicing skills ranging from CPR to the care and maintenance of chest tubes.
