What is the Nervous System?

Think of the nervous system as the body’s electrical circuit. The brain, spinal cord and nerves are constantly sending messages throughout the body to control how it works. When something goes wrong with one part of the nervous system, it can affect basic body functions such as moving, speaking, swallowing, breathing or learning. Neurological problems can also impact your memory, senses or mood.

AnMed Neurology

If you live with a neurological condition, such as a movement disorder, migraines or epilepsy, your doctor may refer you to AnMed Neurology. We may perform neuroimaging tests and physical exams to learn more about your condition, so we can recommend the right treatment for you. Count on our doctors and nurse practitioners to help you manage pain and other symptoms over the long term.

Surgery

In many cases, your care will start with nonsurgical treatment. But your doctor may refer you to a neurosurgeon if an MRI shows something unusual in your nervous system, or conservative care doesn’t relieve your symptoms. Your brain, spine and nerve surgeon will take the least invasive approach to spare as much healthy tissue as possible and make your recovery easier.

Neuroscience Center

After a stroke, another brain injury or neurosurgery, you may recover in the Neuroscience Center on the seventh floor of AnMed Medical Center. Staffed by neurologists and neurosurgeons, this area of the hospital offers three levels of care:

  • Neuroscience intensive care unit (NSICU) – Provides very close monitoring, with one specially trained neuroscience nurse for every two patients
  • Neuroscience telemetry unit – Monitors your heart activity remotely and allows more freedom of movement than the NSICU
  • Neuroscience step-down unit – Serves patients who need comprehensive neurologic therapy

Because all these services are on the same floor, you’ll easily transition from one level of care to the next as your condition improves.

Family Waiting Area

With lockers, a kitchen and several separate seating areas, the Neuroscience Center waiting room can accommodate several families at once. A playroom provides fun activities for children, and a consultation room gives loved ones privacy when they receive updates from the staff.

Visitor Guidelines

Visitors are good medicine, but for everyone’s safety, guests at the Neuroscience Center should keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Patients may have up to two visitors at one time.
  • Doors will be locked during patient rest periods.
  • All visitors must wear shoes.

COVID-19 precautions may also apply.

Rehabilitation

Recovery doesn’t stop when you leave the Neuroscience Center. A brain or spine injury can affect your ability to do daily tasks, so your doctor will likely order rehabilitation. Explore the comprehensive rehabilitation options available right here in Anderson.
