Radiation therapy uses radiation to destroy or damage cancer cells. It is one of the most common cancer treatments, and can be used by itself or with other forms of treatment. Your radiation oncologist will work closely with your other physicians to tailor the best treatment for you.

Radiation is a local treatment, which means it only affects the part of the body being treated. Side-effects are usually limited to the region being treated and improve after treatments are completed. Your radiation oncologist will review the indications, benefits and potential side-effects at your initial consultation. Radiation is also used for pain control and in certain benign conditions. New technology for delivering radiation allows doctors to pinpoint the cancer cells much more precisely than ever before.

At AnMed Health, our radiation oncology department exclusively uses Varian equipment, one of the most respected brands of radiation equipment. Varian's TrueBeam™ System for high-precision image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery makes treatment from these specialists extremely effective in destroying cancers of lung, breast, prostate, head and neck, and other types of cancer.

Radiation Oncology is located in the Cancer Center and offers the following state-of-the-art technologies:

  • Linear accelerators deliver deep-penetrating radiation as well as superficial radiation when treating the skin.
  • IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) delivers high-dose radiation to tumors with great accuracy while minimizing radiation doses to the surrounding body parts.
  • Light Speed Wide-bore CT scanner helps plan precise radiation therapy planning using advanced technology.
  • Electron beam therapy for skin treatments, e.g. skin cancer or keloids.
  • Prostate brachytherapy uses radioactive seeds implanted or deployed directly into or immediately adjacent to the disease.
  • High dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy available for lung, gynecologic, prostate and breast cancer patients.
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) uses high dose rates of radiation to focally treat lesions in the brain. These treatments are usually done in conjunction with a neurosurgeon.
  • Stereotactic Body Radiosugery (SBRT) uses high dose rates of radiation therapy to treat tumor cells. The most common treatments sites are the lungs, liver, adrenal glands, and vertebral bodies. These treatments are typically delivered in one to five visits.
