According to the National Institutes of Health, weight loss surgery is the only proven method of achieving long-term weight loss for the morbidly obese.
In most cases, patients must be 100 pounds or more above their ideal body weight or have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more. Someone with a BMI of 35 to 39 will be considered for surgery if obesity-related health conditions create a medical need for weight reduction and if other, non-surgical alternatives have been exhausted.
Anyone who qualifies for surgery must first have a thorough health assessment. This includes diagnostic tests to identify existing medical conditions. A psychiatric evaluation or counseling is also required.
