Access to Oncology Clinical Trials
AnMed Health's cancer patients have
access to groundbreaking clinical trials through the health's systems
affiliation with the National Cancer Institute through the Upstate Carolina Community Clinical Oncology Program
(CCOP).
Physicians work closely with our patients to assess the potential benefit to
participating in a clinical trial. On average, AnMed Health has 160 clinical
trials open for cancer patients. The trials are available for all major diseases
sites, and include trials aimed at cancer prevention and symptom management.
"The advances in cancer care over the last decade are the result of research
through clinical trials which have resulted in many new treatment and prevention
options for cancer care. At AnMed Health, we are committed to offering our
patients state-of-the-art cancer care here at home," said Rhonda Ballew, who
heads the Oncology Research division.
About Clinical Trials Clinical trials evaluate new
treatments on a specific patient population. Each study is designed to answer
specific scientific questions and help find potentially better ways to prevent,
diagnose and treat cancer. These research studies are conducted to determine if
a treatment or protocol is safe and effective. If the outcomes are positive,
they also help make new therapies available to cancer patients nationwide.
Through the trial, the physician and staff work closely on evaluating and
monitoring the patient. There may be additional monitoring required for the
purpose of learning about potential side effects and benefits of the clinical
trial.
