Asthmania Academy helps children with asthma and the people
who care for them. Our goal is to work with patients, families and physicians to
improve asthma control. Our specialized staff includes certified asthma
educators (AE-C), pediatric hospitalists and certified pulmonary function
technologists (CPFT) who can assess asthma control, perform diagnostic studies
and provide recommendations based on nationally-recognized asthma management
guidelines.
Asthma doesn't have to control you Asthmania Academy
gives you access to asthma experts who can provide education about:
- The role of inflammation in asthma
- The difference between long-term control and quick-relief medication
- The proper technique for using inhalers, taking medications and measuring
peak flow
- Acute symptoms and those associated with poor asthma control
- How to use a written Asthma Action Plan
- How to control/avoid asthma triggers
Asthmania Academy offers support from Family Connection of
South Carolina. Family Connection offers monthly workshops to provide
encouragement and continuing education. You can also receive:
- Free and confidential support from a parent who has a child with asthma
- Free educational materials
The staff at Asthmania Academy can also screen for exercise-induced
bronchospasm (EIB). If exercise causes your child to cough, wheeze or feel short
of breath, they may be suffering from EIB. The certified asthma educator (AE-C)
can recommend treatment options and help determine if further testing is needed.
Diagnostic Studies
- Asthma Control Questionnaire (depending on age of child)
- Spirometry
- This test is usually given to children 5 and older.
- At the time of initial assessment, spirometry is used to determine the
severity of the illness and determine its reversibility.
- After treatment has been initiated and symptoms and/or peak flow
readings have stabilized, spirometry is used to document attainment of
normal or near normal airway function.
- Spirometry is also used during periods of prolonged or progressive loss
of asthma control.
- All patients should go through this test at least once every one to two
years to assess maintenance of airway function.
