High School Diploma

Education level required for the careers below require a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Engineering Technician

    An engineering technician conducts routine maintenance to guarantee equipment operates efficiently.

    HSD/GED required. Prefer 1 year of active general maintenance experience; and/or successfully completed a 2 year apprenticeship program or licensed as a Journeyman Electrician, Plumber, and or HVAC technician within the state of S.C. 

  • Nursing Assistant

    A nursing assistant provides personal care such as bathing, skin care, turning and positioning, and toileting needs. Assists patients with meals, ambulation and other activities of daily living (ADLs). This role also obtains and documents vital signs and reports abnormal results to the patient’s nurse.

  • Patient Transporter

    The patient transporter transports patients within the hospital to different clinical areas for tests as needed.

  • Patient Sitter

    The patient sitter sits with patients that are deemed a risk to themselves or others to ensure they are in a safe environment.

  • Sterile Processing Technician

    The sterile processing technician is in charge of tasks such as decontaminating, assembling, and sterilizing surgical instruments, including receiving, cleaning, and processing instruments from the OR through various methods.  This role will be responsible for inspecting, assembling, labeling, disinfecting, and sterilizing instruments from the OR and other medical center sections, ensuring they are ready for use. They also coordinate with the surgery schedule to prepare case carts with necessary supplies for each procedure, sending them to surgery at the designated times.

    Must obtain certification in sterile processing within one year of hire.

  • Environmental Services Technician

    The EVS technician ensures cleanliness and sanitation in designated areas by following approved procedures. This role completes regular cleaning tasks in various areas, such as patient care spaces, diagnostic areas, offices, restrooms, and public spaces, while meeting quality and safety standards. They keep an ample supply of supplies on hand for restocking in work areas. Also, they properly dispose of solid waste, biohazard materials, recyclables, and confidential trash according to established protocols.

  • Guest Ambassador

    The guest ambassador is responsible for providing outstanding customer service to patients, families, and guests. They would do this by greeting them upon arrival, providing room numbers/directions and escorting when needed. The Guest Ambassador would also assist with special events and serve as a tour guide. 

    A high school diploma or GED and customer service experience needed for this role.

  • Emergency Business Office Registrar

    The EBO Registrar is responsible for obtaining and entering accurate demographic information for patient registration, collection of money, charge posting, admissions, and order entry as indicated by MD.  Communicate accurate information within the facility to expedite the care of the patient.

    Qualifications for this role include a high school diploma or GED and excellent customer service skills. Windows, Excel, & AS400 experience preferred. Medical terminology and/or secretarial experience preferred.

  • Medical Office Specialist (MOS)

    The MOS greets the public, answers the telephone, check in/registers patients, check out/ schedules follow-up appointments and collects payments. This role maintains accurate and up-to-date patient information. They also maintain, copy and file patient records and charts.

    Qualifications for this role require a high school diploma or GED.  Medical office experience preferred and EMR experience preferred.

  • Billing Specialist

    The billing specialist is responsible for billing insurance for hospital and physician services billed by hospital. This role will have interactions with Medical Records department and hospital coders as well as some interactions with patients and insurance payers.

    Requires High School Diploma or GED and computer experience.  Prior electronic and/or hardcopy billing preferred but not required.  Must have good communication skills.  Collection experience preferred.  Prior experience working with  Government, State, and Commercial Insurance carriers helpful but not required.

  • Food Service Worker

    The food service worker is responsible for setting up trayline and serving meals to patients.  This role must maintain equipment and sanitation standards for DHEC regulations.

     Requirements for this role include the ability to understand and carry out both written and oral instructions. Requires two (2) to three (3) weeks on the job training to become proficient in job responsibilities.

  • Anesthesia Technologist

    In order to ensure the safety and efficiency of anesthesia care, an anesthesia technician is responsible for supporting the anesthesiologist and anesthetists. This involves preparing, cleaning, and maintaining anesthesia equipment and supplies. Additionally, this role provides the necessary medications used by the anesthesiologists and ensure proper documentation is maintained. 

    Prior training as a Nurse Assistant is preferred for this role.

  • Hospital Pharmacy Technician

    The hospital pharmacy technician locate, dispense, pack, and label a prescribed medication for a patient that is then reviewed for accuracy by a pharmacist before dispensed to the patient. They might also help pharmacists with administrative tasks such as processing insurance claims, tracking inventory, and filing paperwork.

    Pharmacy technicians entering the occupation need a high school diploma or GED.  South Carolina registration required with additional certification preferred.

Certificate Programs

Education required for the careers listed below require a high school diploma or equivalent, along with a certificate.  Many technical colleges as well as some medical schools offer these certificates.

  • Patient Care Technician (PCT)

    The patient care technician provides personal care such as bathing, skin care, turning and positioning, and toileting needs. This role assists patients with meals, ambulation and other activities of daily living (ADLs). They also will obtain and document vital signs and reports abnormal results to the patient’s nurse.

    High School Diploma/GED required as well as competition of an approved nursing assistant training course required. 

  • Physical Therapist Assistant

    Under the direction and supervision of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants treat patients through exercise, massage, gait and balance training, and other therapeutic interventions. They record patients' progress and report the results of each treatment to the physical therapist.  

    All states require physical therapist assistants to be licensed or certified. Licensure typically requires graduation from an accredited physical therapist assistant program and passing the National Physical Therapy Exam for physical therapist assistants.

  • Emergency Department Technician

    Obtains vital signs including TPR, weights, and blood pressure, recognizing and reporting abnormalities to nurse responsible or to doctor, records vital signs on patient record. Applies sterile bandages and completes non-sterile bandage changing. Completes ECG per physicians or other provider’s order and established policy and procedure.

    High School Diploma/GED required as well as completion of an approved nursing assistant training course, hospital based nursing assistant, phlebotomist, EMT, or surgical technician required.

Associate Degree

Education level required for the careers below require a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as an Associate Degree.

  • Respiratory Therapist (RT)

    Respiratory therapists are highly skilled medical professionals who focus on pulmonary medicine to provide therapeutic care for individuals with respiratory conditions. This role collaborates with patients to create personalized treatment plans and conduct a range of diagnostic tests. These dedicated professionals specialize in addressing diverse breathing problems, including chronic respiratory disease, asthma, and emphysema.

    To become a Certified Respiratory Therapist, certification or eligibility for certification from the National Board for Respiratory Therapy is required.

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)

    The surgical technologist is responsible for a variety of tasks throughout the entire surgical process, from preparation to post-operation. These include creating a sterile environment, serving as a scrub or circulating assistant, and assisting with cleanup. This role also provides nursing care for patients, manage laboratory specimens, and supply necessary instruments, sutures, and materials. 

    Completion of an accredited surgical technologist program and certification is required within one year of onboarding with AnMed.

  • Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT)

    The Medical Laboratory Technician plays a crucial role in collecting, processing, and analyzing biological specimens, performing assays, troubleshooting techniques, and ensuring quality assessment in various areas such as clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, and molecular biology within the clinical laboratory setting.

    MLT: 

    MLT ASCP Eligible: Associate Degree in Medical Technology, MLT (ASCP) or HHS eligible.
     
    MLT ASCP: Associate Degree in Medical Technology, MLT ASCP required.
     
    MLT HEW: Associate Degree in Medical Technology, MLT HEW required.
     

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)

    The CMA conducts patient evaluations, records nursing interventions such as giving medications, vaccines, treatments, and/or procedures. This role ensures patient's well-being and promptly notifies provider of any symptom changes or condition alterations. They will support the provider in delivering patient care, including office procedures, surgeries, and tests, within competency boundaries and following protocols. They also aid in admissions, pre-certification, immunization paperwork, referral scheduling, and documentation in a timely manner, and sends essential details to relevant staff for authorization completion.

    Certification through AAMA, NHA, NCCT or AMT is required. 

  • Registered Nurse (RN)

    The RN delivers expert nursing care to assigned patients, following doctors' instructions, ensuring their comfort and overall well-being. This role conducts thorough assessments, administers treatments and medications as prescribed, and diligently records progress and observations. They collaborate with the healthcare team to coordinate patient care and actively engage in educating patients and their families. They also demonstrate leadership by working harmoniously with other nursing staff and upholding professional nursing standards in clinical settings. They may also provide services at patients' homes, requiring a valid nursing license issued by the State Board of Nursing Licensure and Registration.

    ADN teammates are required to be enrolled in a BSN program within 18 months of hire date. BSN must be obtained within 4 years of hire date.

  • Radiologic Technician (RT)

    The radiologic technician is responsible for performing radiographic procedures on patients of every age utilizing techniques to provide quality images for physician interpretation. This role operates radiographic equipment.

    Requirements for this role include being a graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology Program (Associates Degree/ AnMed Rad Tech Program) and have a current ARRT certification and current SCRQSA license.

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

    The LPN conducts initial patient assessment, including vital signs and updating medical history in the electronic medical record system. This role ensures the patient is prepared for examination or procedure, maintains cleanliness and organization of patient care areas, and assists provider with various tasks within scope of practice. They are proficient in emergency equipment and medications.  Also, they administer vaccines and medications as directed, and monitor IV hydration when certified.

    Certification in Licensed Practical Nursing and a SC LPN license is required.

  • Occupational Therapist Assistant (OTA)

    An occupational therapist assistant helps occupational therapists treat patients with disabilities. The role works under the supervision of OTs and carry out the treatment plans created by the OT.

    Occupational therapy assistants need an associate’s degree from an accredited occupational therapy assistant program. All states regulate the practice of occupational therapy assistants. Occupational therapy aides typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and receive training on the job.

  • Computerized Tomography (CT) Technician

    The CT tech conducts radiographic exams on patients of all ages using advanced techniques to ensure high-quality images for medical diagnosis. This role analyzes patient medical records to understand their history and clinical information for CT correlation. They also operate state-of-the-art CT equipment to capture detailed images for accurate interpretation by physicians.

    Requirements for this role include being graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology Program, current ARRT certification,  and current SCRQSA license.

  • Ultrasound Technician

    The ultrasound technician conducts ultrasound scans on patients of all ages to produce high-quality images for medical evaluation, while also cross-referencing patient records for relevant medical information and operating ultrasound machinery.

    Requirements for this role include being graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology Program or Medical Sonography Program, current ARRT certification,  and current SCRQSA license.

  • Mammography Technician

    The mammography technician conducts mammography procedures for patients of all ages, ensuring high-quality images for physician analysis, while also reviewing medical records for relevant history and previous procedures. This role performs routine and advanced breast imaging examinations, including ultrasound imaging, in accordance with department protocols.

    Requirements for this role include being graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology Program or Medical Sonography Program, current ARRT certification,  and current SCRQSA license.

  • MRI Technician

    Utilizing various techniques, the MRI technician is responsible for conducting MRI procedures on patients of all ages. This role carefully evaluates the technical quality of the MRI scans and ensure they are ready for interpretation by physicians. Additionally, they operate and monitor the MRI equipment, promptly identifying any malfunctions or servicing requirements and taking the necessary steps to report them.

    Requirements for this role include being graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology Program, current ARRT certification,  and current SCRQSA license.

Bachelor Degree or Higher Programs

Education required for the careers listed below require a Bachelor Degree or higher.  Many 4-year colleges and universities offer options for obtaining your degree(s).

  • Registered Nurse (RN)

    The RN delivers expert nursing care to assigned patients, following doctors' instructions, ensuring their comfort and overall well-being. This role conducts thorough assessments, administers treatments and medications as prescribed, and diligently records progress and observations. They collaborate with the healthcare team to coordinate patient care and actively engage in educating patients and their families. They also demonstrate leadership by working harmoniously with other nursing staff and upholding professional nursing standards in clinical settings. They may also provide services at patients' homes, requiring a valid nursing license issued by the State Board of Nursing Licensure and Registration.

  • Nurse Practitioner (NP)

    As a highly skilled nurse practitioner, this role works closely with doctors and other healthcare professionals to deliver top-notch primary care to a specific group of patients, whether they are receiving treatment in a hospital or an outpatient facility. With a strong foundation in health promotion, disease prevention, and comprehensive patient assessment, they are equipped to effectively manage both the physical and emotional aspects of healthcare. 

    To qualify for this role, a Bachelor's degree and RN certification are necessary, along with a Master's degree and at least three years of experience.

  • Registered Clinical Dietician

    The registered clinical dietitian completes individualized nutrition assessments, education, and counseling for patients in an Inpatient or Outpatient setting. This could include creating educational materials for patients and their families to take home, teaching classes, and implementing programs for hospital staff and the community. 

    Requirements for this role include having a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or Dietetics, as well as being a Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist through Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics/Commission on Dietetic Registration and hold  current licensure with South Carolina Board of Dietetics.

  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)

    The CRNA administers different types of anesthesia and closely monitors the patient's vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate. Any abnormalities are immediately reported to the surgeon and supervising anesthesiologist. The CRNA also uses their judgment to determine the appropriate dosage of anesthesia and continuously records the patient's vital signs and condition. They document the drugs used and gas percentages, as well as any other relevant findings in the medical record. In case of emergencies, they initiate resuscitative measures and administer necessary drugs. They accompany the patient from the operating room to the recovery room and provide all pertinent information to the recovery room personnel. Any unusual symptoms or conditions are promptly reported to the anesthesiologist.

    Requirements for this position include a current South Carolina Advanced Practice Nurse licensure; graduate of an accredited school of nurse anesthetists; and current certification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.

  • Medical Technologist (MT)

    The medical technologist plays a crucial role in collecting, processing, and analyzing biological specimens, performing assays, troubleshooting techniques, and ensuring quality assessment in various areas such as clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, and molecular biology within the clinical laboratory setting.

    MT: 
     
    MT ASCP Eligible: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, MT (ASCP) eligible with HHS certification.
     
    MT ASCP: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, MT (ASCP) registry or other nationally recognized registry.

  • Hospital Pharmacist

    While the delivery of medication is a major part of the job, the role extends far beyond this, as they are seen as a core member of the hospital team, when it comes to delivering patient care.  A key role in a hospital pharmacist’s job is determining which form of medication best suits each patient. Each decision must be made in a timely and efficient manner and requires significant input from doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

    Hospital pharmacists will often monitor the effects of the medications they prescribe and counsel their patients on the effects of the drugs.

    Another aspect of this role is to recommend administration routes and dosages, all of which are dependent on an individual's needs.

  • Physical Therapist (PT)

    Physical therapists evaluate and record a patient's progress. Physical therapists help injured or ill patients improve movement and manage pain. They are often an important part of preventive care, rehabilitation, and treatment for patients with chronic conditions, illnesses, or injuries. Physical Therapists can work in a variety of settings to include acute care hospital, home health, pediatrics and outpatient.

    Physical therapists entering the occupation need a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. All states require physical therapists to be licensed.

  • Occupational Therapist (OT)

    Occupational therapists help people, such as those with disabilities, live independently. Occupational therapists evaluate and treat people who have injuries, illnesses, or disabilities. They help patients meet goals to develop, recover, improve, and maintain skills needed for daily living and working.

     Occupational therapists typically need a master’s degree in occupational therapy. All states require occupational therapists to be licensed.

  • Speech Therapist or Speech-Language Pathologist

    Speech-language pathologists (sometimes called speech therapists) assess and treat people who have speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders. They also treat clients who have problems swallowing.

    Speech-language pathologists typically need at least a master’s degree in speech-language pathology. All states require that speech-language pathologists be licensed. Licensure requirements vary by state but typically include clinical experience and passing an exam.
