When Inquiring About Patients' Conditions

In compliance with federal HIPAA regulations, the following one-word conditions may be provided, only if the inquirer specifically identifies the patient by first and last name:

  • Good – Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious and comfortable. Indicators are excellent.
  • Fair – Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious, but may be uncomfortable. Indicators are favorable.
  • Serious – Vital signs may be unstable and not within normal limits. Patient is acutely ill. Indicators are questionable.
  • Critical – Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. Patient may be unconscious. Indicators are unfavorable.
  • Undetermined – Patient is awaiting physician and/or assessment.
In-depth guidelines on releasing patient conditions are available here. These guidelines were reviewed and endorsed by the S.C. Hospital Association, the S.C. Press Association and the S.C. Broadcasters Association.
