Resident Life

AnMed Health residents leave with more than solid medical training. They leave with a family. New Resident Weekend lets incoming physicians explore their surroundings and get to know the residency staff. Social outings throughout the year — from supper clubs to trivia nights — help residents and faculty form lasting friendships.

The best way to learn is by doing. So in addition to practicing family medicine, residents go through a variety of experiences from a mock deposition to a weeklong procedures workshop. A community medicine scavenger hunt allows residents to discover the wealth of resources Anderson has to offer. If you've got the makings of a world traveler, ask about AnMed Health's global health elective. This unique opportunity has allowed several residents to travel abroad and gain an understanding of health care in other countries.

Matt Hardy, M.D. - Chief Resident, Class of 2021

Q: Where did you grow up?
A: I am originally from Boca Raton, Florida. However, I moved to Greenville when I started high school and have called the Upstate home ever since!

Q: Where did you attend medical school?
A: VCOM Carolinas in Spartanburg

Q: Why did you choose family medicine and when did you know that it was the type of medicine you wanted to practice?
A: I have long been interested in doing global health and family medicine is the specialty that I feel is most helpful abroad, as you are able to care for patients in all seasons of life.

Q: What impressed you about the AnMed Health Residency Program when you were interviewing for programs?
A: Easy, the environment and the people! When on my interviewing circuit, I noted that there was a lot of overlap between family medicine programs. I was drawn to AnMed as it offers an unopposed program with ample opportunity to practice a wide range of skills and care for medically complex patients. However, what set AnMed apart was the tight knit atmosphere I immediately felt upon meeting the residents here. The residents were welcoming and quickly made my wife and I feel at home. Now, after two years of being here, I can truly say that the collaborative, family-like atmosphere is what I love most about our program!.

Q: What can you tell others about Anderson,SC?
A: Anderson has been a great place to live for my family! We love that we have all the conveniences needed for daily life nearby (shopping, parks, ice cream, donuts, etc.), but Anderson maintains a small town feel! We love our downtown and all the unique, local restaurants we have to choose from!

Jay Wilkins, M.D. - Chief Resident, Class of 2021

Q: Where did you grow up?
A: In Chapin, SC. It’s a small town near Columbia. I attended Clemson University for undergraduate.

Q: Where did you attend medical school?
A: The MUSC in Charleston, SC.

Q: Why did you choose Family Medicine and when did you know that was the type of medicine you wanted to practice?
A: I entered my third year of medical school with an open mind, and found myself enjoying nearly every rotation, so I chose family medicine to allow me to continue to see a broad scope of patients.

Q: What impressed you about the AnMed Health Residency Program when you were interviewing for programs?
A: I was first impressed by AnMed’s great clinical experience for family residents including an open ICU, a thriving clinic, and an associated sports fellowship program. It was obvious that the faculty are passionate about teaching and cared about the residents' growth. Beyond that, I loved that the residents all seemed to get along and worked well together. We have a great sense of community in our program. I still have no regrets about choosing AnMed!

Q: What can you tell others about Anderson, SC?
A: Anderson is a medium sized town that is big enough so there are several really good restaurants, a nice downtown area, and plenty going on, but still small enough that you run into people in the grocery. It’s close to the mountains with plenty of great hiking nearby, and if you like a bigger city, Greenville, Charlotte, and Atlanta aren’t far.
