Cancer patients can receive immunotherapy, a cancer treatment, without having to travel from Anderson County.
AnMed Health offers immunotherapy, which enables a cancer patient's immune system to detect and destroy cancer cells more effectively without the many side effects of traditional chemotherapy.
Nearly five years ago, Terry Cooley was diagnosed with melanoma or skin cancer on the right side of his face. He had surgery, but cancer spread to his lymph nodes within two years of the surgery.
Cooley received another surgery followed by radiation. He was initially treated with chemotherapy, but his system did not respond well, and within a few months, cancer spread to his liver and bones. At that point, he started on immunotherapy.
"I was a little tired at first because of the side effects, but they didn't last long. I'm glad I could receive the treatment without having to drive to Greenville, S.C., or Georgia from my home in Honea Path," Cooley said.
Cooley's cancer is now in remission. Dr. Jay Nayak of AnMed Health Oncology and Hematology Specialists was treating Cooley and recommended immunotherapy.

"Immunotherapy is meant to make your immune system more effective in finding and killing the cancer," Nayak said.
Cancers that respond well to immunotherapy include melanoma, lung, bladder, kidney and some lymphomas.
"Immunotheraphy is mostly used to treat stage four cancers. However, immunotheraphy is given in the earlier stages of some cancers to prevent the cancer from coming back," said Nayak.
