Neck and Spine Surgery

AnMed Health specialists treat a variety of complex conditions that affect the brain, spine, nervous system, and the vessels that feed the brain and nervous system. Our doctors diagnose and treat these disorders with both surgical and non-surgical methods. AnMed Health’s neck and spine specialists include orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons trained in the latest microscopic and computer-guided surgical techniques. This kind of advanced technology helps to greatly reduce the impact of surgery on surrounding tissues.

The brain is the command center for the rest of the body. It stores memories and knowledge, interprets the senses, initiates body movements and controls behavior. It communicates with the rest of the body via a network of nerves that are connected to the brain through the spinal column.

Our specialists are experts in treating brain and spinal conditions, including:

Aneurysms – An aneurysm is a weak or thin area in a blood vessel in the brain that balloons out and fills with blood. The bulge can put pressure on a nerve or surrounding brain tissue and rupture, spilling blood into the surrounding tissue. Observation is a reasonable option if the aneurysm is very small or in a location which has a low risk of growth or rupture. When treatment is needed, endovascular embolization may be an alternative to surgery. If the aneurysm has already damaged the artery, surgery may be necessary.

Tumors – Brain and spinal cord tumors are abnormal growths of tissue found inside the skull or the bony spinal column of the central nervous system. They may be cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign). The three most commonly used treatments are surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Doctors also may prescribe steroids to reduce the swelling inside the central nervous system.

Carotid Stenosis – A severe blockage of the carotid arteries that supply blood to the brain, carotid stenosis may cause a mini-stroke. Carotid endarterectomy is a vascular surgical procedure that helps restore normal blood flow. AnMed Health specialists may perform an alternative, carotid angioplasty and stenting, in patients who may be at too high risk to undergo surgery.

Spinal Disorders – AnMed Health specialists offer the latest treatments for all types of degenerative spinal disorders and injuries, including herniated discs, spinal stenosis and spinal instability. Degenerative spinal disorders are caused by wear and tear over time to the bone and soft tissues in your spine. Some degenerative spinal disorders occur naturally as we age, but people who put increased strain on their necks and backs can increase the rate at which this wear and tear occurs.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common problem that affects the use of the hand. It often occurs as a result of hand repetitive motion such as typing or paying an instrument. Our specialists use conservative treatments to provide relief. When surgery is required, they also use the latest endoscopic techniques to provide patients with a speedier recovery.

Peripheral Nerve Problems – The peripheral nervous system transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to every other part of the body. More than 100 types of peripheral nerve disorders have been identified, each with its own set of symptoms. AnMed Health specialists are experts in diagnosing and managing all types of peripheral nerve conditions.
